Aquitaine is simply a prototype unit built for Marine Nationale under the French-Italian FREMM (Frégate Européenne Multi-Mission) program. The first plans included the acquisition of as many as 17 ships under this program, which were to replace 9 avis types D’Estienne d’Orves (A 69), 3 Tourville frigates (F 67) and six units of this class Georges Leygues (F 70).
