New trend in the Sejm: Renting cars for public money

As Virtual Poland has revealed, 1 in 3 Members already usage the anticipation of renting cars at the expense of taxpayers. From November 2023 until the end of 2024, 146 parliamentarians utilized this option. This is simply a fresh trend – previously long-term lease was not so popular among politicians.

Under the current rules, Members may finance the hiring of flat-rate cars to run a parliamentary office which amounts to over PLN 23 000 per month. This anticipation was confirmed by the legal opinion of the Bureau of Sejm Analysis in 2020, provided that after the conclusion of the contract the car does not pass on to the policy.

Spending Recorders. PiS associate at the head of the list

The most of the car rental was issued by a PiS MP Andrzej Costowniak – until 60 354,50 zł. Interestingly, in his property statement, the politician admitted that he owned respective own cars, among others. Audi A6 and Mercedes.

Other prominent politicians included in the recordlist:

  • Jarosław Urbaniak (KO) – 55 437.45 zł
  • Rafał Bochenek (PiS) – 54 012,88 PLN
  • Przemysław Witek (KO) – 53 129.61 zł
  • Krzysztof Paszyk (PSL-Third Road) – 50 874.14 zł (although access to ministerial cars)

"I don't want to drive my car," the MPs explained

In talks with journalists, politicians admit that the usage of rented cars is common.

I don't drive this car on vacation, but if anyone says they've never utilized a car like this for private purposes, they'll lie.
