After dismantling the monument of the Red Army in Pyrzyce, Russian diplomacy made an authoritative objection. The dismantling took place on 31 July after the decision of the local government and consultation with residents. At stake is the right of Poland to clear public space from symbols of imposed dependence.
Note from the Russian embassy
The demolition of the Red Army monument in Pyrzyce triggered the reaction of the Russian diplomatic mission. Kresy.pl portal reported that the embassy sent a protest to the Polish authorities and invoked a bilateral agreement. The note uses the word ‘dangerous infringement’. The work was completed on 31 July 2026.
Moscow again acts as a guardian of its own version of past on Polish soil. The problem is not the memory of the dead or the protection of the war cemetery. It's a monument in urban space that perpetuated the Red Army's image as a donor of freedom. Meanwhile, the German business ended in 1945, but Poland did not regain political freedom. There has been repression, communist regulation and dependence on the russian Union.
Pyrzyc's voice was heard
The destiny of the facility was the subject of a local debate for respective months. An open gathering with residents was held on January 8, 2026 at the Pyrzycki Cultural Centre. The result of the consultation gave the supporter an advantage. Later the resolution was adopted by the municipal council, and the substance coincided with preparations for the reconstruction of Jan Kiliński Street.
The IPN rated the monument as a sign of enslavement. The Institute besides pointed to the decommunization bill and the support of most residents for demolition. This is where the dispute lies. Polish regulations and local community find the appearance of squares and streets in Pyrzyce. Russian diplomacy has the right to object. This does not give him the right to veto the decision of the Polish self-government.
Mog and propaganda are 2 different things.
The graves of soldiers are protected and require respect. A monument to the alien army performs a different function: it transmits a political assessment of history. The alignment of both cases serves the Russian narrative, but does not order memory. On the contrary, it darkens it.
The state liberation story allows Moscow to overlook the price that Poles paid after the front. This price included the persecution of the underworld of independence, the elimination of free political life and decades of submission to the Kremlin. Removing the monument does not erase the Red Army's engagement in defeating the 3rd Reich. On the another hand, it receives an imperial tale a privileged place in the centre of the Polish city.
Polish memory is Polish responsibility
The embassy protest confirms that the stone relics of communism inactive have political importance for Russia. The Polish answer should stay factual: graves we protect, past we study, and symbols of dominance we remove by law.
Pyrzyc residents regained influence on their own surroundings. For the remainder of the country, there is just as circumstantial a lesson in this matter. Sovereignty includes borders and institutions, but it besides applies to names, monuments and stories passed on to next generations. The Kremlin cannot be a reviewer of Polish memory.
