More than a 3rd of EU citizens are considering leaving Germany

At the end of 2023, there were around 5.1 million people with citizenship from another EU country surviving in Germany. This means that their number has almost doubled since the end of 2010. The highest number of Romanian citizens (910 thousand) and Poland (888 thousand). The following were citizens of Italy, Bulgaria and Croatia.

Why is 35% of EU citizens considering leaving Germany? The most commonly indicated reasons are:

  • Housing costs – 42%

  • maintenance costs – 36%

  • Discrimination – 39%

At the end of last year there were about 83.5 million people surviving in Germany, a decrease of about 100,000 people. This trend cannot even reverse the influx of immigrants.

This was the first population decline since 2020. Between 2011 and 2012 the population grew mainly due to immigration.

Now the trend has turned. statistic indicate that decline is due to decreasing net immigration.

In 2025 more people came to Germany by 220–260,000 than they emigrated from them. This means that the migration balance was importantly lower (approximately 40%) than a year earlier, erstwhile the number of people arriving in Germany exceeded the number of migrants by 430 thousand.
