The ethics of governance sounds proud, serious, liable and even global. It will not be surprising, therefore, that our first association with this slogan runs towards politicians and those in charge of law in different countries. However, I want to look at this subject from a very different angle. Or not so different? due to the fact that what else can you rule? And who can? Yeah.
This is where it gets truly interesting. I'm tempted to say it's an inexhaustible subject. due to the fact that we're all something, and we're all in charge. Starting with what we pay attention to, what we want to believe and how we manage our own time, and ending with the fact that apart from ourselves, we frequently “rule” others. Teachers regulation the way of education and youth approach to the subject. The police effort to regulation the street order – at least that's what they assume. Rectors regulation universities (and of course rector hours, to the large joy of students).
We all have our power. Of course, it is not as spectacular as tv debates on laws. But does this mean our micropower has little power? It would be a sin to say that. After all, we make this world, society and temper hanging in the air. Our regular choices are whether we grin at the “good morning” to the store clerk, or not to look at her, throwing a passionate “card”, building the reality in which we live. And that's not so marginal anymore. due to the fact that our reality is our world, not just anything, right?
And right here, in these tiny moments, our individual ethics of governance begin... Only in the modern world, it is highly appealing to effort to forget about it, which can be successful. After all, we feed each another stories about success, efficiency and taking life by storm. We live in a culture that subconsciously teaches us calculating. Words specified as “loyalty”, “sensibility” or “empathy” begin to sound out of style, almost naive. And even if you don't, it's usually erstwhile you're increasing up that you lose your religion in them. Questions arise: “Why does the planet look like this?” "Why do we as people do specified things to each other?". Yeah, well, it's not like we're hurting another individual without realizing it. Then it would be half poor... We begin to value everything: time, relationships, another man. The material gain, or the greater power, has become 1 of the major currencies that seems to cloud human consciences.
Sometimes I feel like we've been caught up in any ruthless game. In fact, we get into it all day. What you do and what attitude you choose is your choice. Your work and how you care about your conscience. And in the game, as you know, it's all about moves, strategy, and cold calculation. We halt seeing people, and we start seeing functions. The courier only becomes individual to deliver the package, a friend to individual who is “worth having in the network” and who can be useful to us. We're starting to treat reality like a chessboard, and others like pawns that request to be set up to accomplish the goal. It's so reviving and so overwhelming... Elections, gameplay, possibly strategies. Be good or cold or even arrogant? Is it worth being a human or insensitive individual going to the dead? And even if it were human, would it be as simple as anesthesia on another man? What hurts us as people more?
Cynicism is tempted due to the fact that it seems to be a safe armor. Walking on corpses and focusing solely on yourself gives an illusion of velocity and gaining more success. 1 could say – the warrant of becoming a successful man. However, there is simply a short and superficially simple question: "But at what cost do you want and choose to become this "man of success"? You go consecutive ahead without wasting time on another people's distractions and problems. Who needs compassion and empathy? At the end of this road, a man is scarily alone. 1 can gain the desired summits, accomplish the most ambitious goals, and then realize that there is no 1 to talk sincerely to in this perfectly arranged world. The success torn from the planet by force, without looking at the emotional costs of others, yet has a taste of very bitter... Or at least that's how idealists like to tell each another not to uncertainty this planet even more than they do today. You gotta make yourself comfortable.
The scary thing is that this anesthetic and calculating thing we carry around all day. erstwhile deeper, another time less. We do not request a big, distant planet for this – we do it in our homes, schools and then in college. We've been trained to do this always since we were young. Remember simple school? That eternal, innocent sound of parents in the background: “What did you get from the card? I'm certain Franek got an A out of that... You can do better than that. You must be the best, you could have won the competition.” From childhood, we have learned that our value depends on whether individual is under us. A girl or a boy on the bench next door seldom just happens to be friends, become a point of reference, individual to be driven distant at all costs. To a greater or lesser extent, but I uncertainty anyone can full deny that feeling in their case.
And with all this baggage, we go on a average day. We become specified “monsters” in the simplest, most innocent situations. We don't care about the another side – especially if we think it's from a “lower sort”. due to the fact that who's the girl behind the money at the marketplace or the waitress at the coffee store who only gives us coffee? Do we see a man in it? individual who can stand up all morning, have their problems, fears, even dreams? Nope. Very frequently it's just a transparent function. A tool for serving the plate. 1 can not look at it, 1 can throw it miserable, icy ‘card’, showing it that it does not be for us. Why? due to the fact that we have no profit from this relationship. She can't get us a better position, she can't get us a position in the group. It doesn't pay to be good to her.
The same silent ruthlessness destroys us from the inside erstwhile we're together all day. It's just a situation: individual at work writes that he feels unwell and asks for a replacement. And boom! “ I just don’t want to. Why should I waste my time?’ It would be besides easy to aid so selflessly. We close the laptop, look away. What is interesting, then the same man, erstwhile he will be in a sub-arm situation, without blinking an eye, will write, “Will you aid me?” due to the fact that then abruptly others become needed.
It's just... is this black script truly the full fact about us? We besides contact normal. I don't know if it's a miracle or a remnant of hope that as a society we haven't gone completely crazy about money and power. erstwhile I think about it, I find it besides pessimistic. It's not like we're going through life like a pack of ruthless wolves. Let's take a look around. Most of us greet a waitress or a clerk, grin at the cash registry and don't tell our college friends that they won't share their notes due to the fact that they're his future competition on the labour market. any of us will even talk, ask how the day is going, genuinely curious about another man. Those constantly dismissive, eternally pompous and looking down on others are fortunately inactive a number – not including us, making mistakes that hurt others erstwhile in a while.
What does that come from? Why, despite all the training, do we inactive choose to be nice?
No, it's not like we're someway proudly rebelling against the system. Let's be honest with each other: we co-create this strategy and feed it all day. We put perfectly casted pictures of our holidays in the tropics on the web, and on LinkedIn we dress each of our faults in words about the “great challenge” and boast about our successes. We like to show that we're winning. We're getting carried distant too. The thing is, this madness has long since escaped our smartphone screens. The same directed illusion we unknowingly carried into the space of real life, straight into face-to-face interactions. We make a false image of reality. We show her more beautiful than she is, filter her failures, and dress her everyday life in a success mask, reasoning nobody sees it. Or do we just not want to see her and in the reaction of others we search to confirm our success, or at least not fail? All in order to show yourself in a better light, to warm others’ admiration, or to gain any social or professional benefit. Don't we truly see the danger that this carries? How long are we inactive authentic in all this, and how long do we become individual in whom only appearances remain? individual who no longer has an autonomous opinion of his own, but only 1 that is comfortable in a given second for the reception by a peculiar group or interviewer.
And the worst part is, this game makes us numb. erstwhile a life turns into an audition for the function of a “man of success”, we start to treat another man like a prop, sometimes even a puppet. due to the fact that how many lives can you live in a planet where only appearances matter? In a planet where a gathering with a friend becomes an unwitting benefit audit, and a fake delight in another people's lives – a currency exchange for individual to be attracted to us in a moment. It's a terrible fatigue of material. The architecture of appearances, which in the morning requires us to work titanically on putting on a mask – or not if we do it automatically. The evening is surrounded by a sense of a powerful existential hangover. But have we reached the point where we are terrified to open our eyes? How frequently and how many have specified a breakthrough occurred?
When I think about it, there's a rebellion in me. Yeah, inactive young, surely a small naive. due to the fact that I don't want to believe that this black screenplay is the full fact about us and that we're going through life like a pack of ruthless blow. Sure, I know we're not all like that. But what scares me is that we see a multiplicity of behaviour that scares a little, sometimes embarrassing, and sometimes making us think about whether it's something incorrect with us, due to the fact that it's something different with the world?
Each of us erstwhile ran into people who hurt us, utilized our trust or treated us like a pawn. We know how it hurts and leaves scars. And possibly that's why, in spite of all this morning, there are inactive people among us who want to believe in ideals. Even so. There are people who want to believe in morality and simply be faithful to the values they profess, even if no 1 is looking at them then and no 1 is giving slapping for it. Even if they endure for it later even more competitions and wounds.
I firmly believe that we do not gotta choose between our own fulfillment and being a good person. Ethics does not mean weakness or giving up a dream. On the contrary, it is the courage to halt and see in another man himself in the midst of the universal momentum. His fatigue, his history, his dreams.
Because what is real power over your life? It's not the ability to dominate others. It is the ability to decide what air we want to breathe, what energy we want to fill our society. Jad, how about a small optimism? It's our quiet, intimate conflict for ourselves. In order to guarantee that, despite the mush of success (whether artificial or artificial as silicone or not), what is most precious in our heart, our empathy and goodness, does not rot.
We can choose coolness and momentum, and we can choose this 1 honest look in the eye. due to the fact that yet it's these small ethical governments that make the planet around us a small bit more human. And we ourselves, erstwhile at the end of the day take off all the pose we've previously posed, close the door to the home behind us, we'll be able to look at our reflection in the mirror and not flinch. It's kind of a privilege to be able to look yourself in the eye without being disappointed.
