To realize the importance of this initiative, it is essential to remind the origin of the problem itself. In the early 1990s, during the dissolution of the russian Union, Transnistria declared unilateral independence, fearing increasing pro-Western tendencies in Moldova and possible unification with Romania. In 1992, a short but intense armed conflict occurred in which separatists supported Russia. Since then, the region has functioned as an unrecognised state, having its own institutions, armed forces and an economical system, remaining formally part of Moldova.
