Modernisation of individual equipment of soldiers continues

More than half a million field uniforms, more integrated bulletproof vests, FAST composite helmets, sleeping bags, protective accessories – these are only part of the orders under Operation Szpej, for which MON spends more and more funds each year. This year, thanks to the SAFE program, the ministry wants to spend PLN 6 billion on individual equipment of soldiers.

At the end of January, a parliamentary interpelling on the modernisation of individual equipment for soldiers was received by the Ministry of National Defence. Operation under the code name ‘Speak’. A group of PiS MPs raised the issue of modern composite helmets, bulletproof vests, optoelectronic equipment, individual weapons and auxiliary weapons for Polish soldiers, asking about implementation of individual projects.

In accordance with the procedure of replying to the parliamentary interpellation, Mr Paweł Bejda, Deputy Minister of National Defence, announced that 273,490 sets of field uniforms and 241,795 sets of summertime field uniforms had already been ordered under Operation Szpej, 45,870 sets of protective clothing, 70,000 winter jackets with a pin and 1000 sets of warming clothing (a full of 7 contracts for the supply of this equipment). The deputy chief of the MON besides informed that under multi-annual contracts (including the options for these contracts) the Polish military is provided with supplies of 21,000 FAST-type composite helmets. "I would like to stress that since 2024, soldiers of the Polish Armed Forces have been equipped with composite helmets. Steel helmets 67/75 have not been decommissioned, but are not presently utilized by soldiers," Minister Bejda assured.

In total, 151 contracts were concluded in 2025 for the acquisition of items of uniforming and disposing of the soldier, spending 2.3% more funds than in 2024 (a year earlier, this increase amounted to 29%), which translates into PLN 3.5–4.5 billion. This year, following the launch of the SAFE mechanism, MON plans to spend PLN 6 billion for this purpose. SAFE program (Security Action For Europe) assumes that the selected EU members will be granted a favourable interest-bearing debt of EUR 150 billion to invest in defence. Poland is to be the biggest beneficiary of SAFE. According to the plans of the Polish government, over 80% of the received EUR 43.7 billion would go to home producers.
