The ruling leader in Myanmar (Birmie) junta, General Min Aung Hlaing, resigned as commander of the armed forces on Monday," informed local state television, quoted by planet agencies.
The military is going to run for president.
The fresh commander-in-chief of the Myanmar army became Hlaing's erstwhile close associate, Gen. Ye Win Oo.
In December and January, the country held parliamentary elections, the first since the February 2021 military coup. They were won by the military-supported Union Party, Solidarity and Development, and a fresh parliament was established in early March.
AFP recalled that according to the Constitution of Myanmar, which the erstwhile military government passed in 2008, the commander-in-chief of the army could not become president. Although Hlaing has not yet officially announced it, the Agency has been widely regarded as the most serious presidential candidate to be selected by the fresh Burmese parliament.
