The Icelandic football club Vikingur Reykjavik has a beef with the police. It's about the illegal sale of beer that happened Saturday after the club game was won. Police entered the stadium.
Vikingur Reykjavik celebrated the national championship on Saturday. The occasion was celebrated with beer, which was sold to fans, according to the authorities, illegally due to the fact that the club did not have a appropriate permit. “Reykjavik’s authorities must clearly dislike us, and we are the pride and symbol of this city,” said Vikingur CEO Heimir Gunlaugsson.
Before the match, the club applied for a sales licence and waited until the last minute for it. At the minute it became clear that acceptance would not be obtained, the club decided to hand out the collected beer to fans in exchange for voluntary donations.
“This beautiful evening was expected to be a fantastic end to the season, it was a celebration for fans, but it was destroyed by a full absurd police action that had already gained publicity in Europe. It's a shame," says Gunlaugsson, quoted by PAP.
Interestingly, beer in the Icelandic stadium has only been drinking since 2022. In Reykjavik, however, this can only be done during global matches organized by the Icelandic Football Federation.
