Former Prime Minister Leszek Miller requested the settlement of the money transferred to Ukraine on October 3 and stated that the Polish border with Russia is "very calm". The control of public funds is necessary, but the proposition that the Russian neighbourhood is simply a safe alternate to independent Ukraine strikes the fundamental interest of Poland.
The question of money is legitimate
Leszek Miller appeared in the podcast "Jankowski Kontra". As Polsat News reports, the erstwhile Prime Minister criticized the way he provided assistance to Kiev. He said Volodymyr Zelenski comes and asks for further measures, and Poland gives them. He demanded an explanation of what was happening with the money transferred, and suggested that it was stolen.
Every gold issued by the Polish state must be accountable. This includes military aid, benefits, loans, guarantees and costs for citizens. Aid to Ukraine must service the interests of Polandand the government is obliged to show Poles the full bill. In this part, Miller's question is needed.
However, the limit of integrity goes where the data ends and the prosecution begins. Polsat News did not supply proof that Polish money was stolen. Miller should so indicate the documents, results of checks or findings of law enforcement authorities. Without it, a strong word remains an innuendo.
False billions cannot replace facts
This discrimination is all the more crucial due to the fact that in September Miller made available a message about the alleged disappearance of EUR 220 billion of EU aid. Demagog showed that the ascribed “The fresh York Times” article did not exist, and EUR 220 billion meant the full cost of the European Union and the associate States' assistance, not the amount stolen by the Kiev authorities. The erstwhile Prime Minister cannot build a serious charge on the material that proved false.
This does not mean giving Kiev assurance without borders. Corruption in Ukraine is simply a real problem, and Poland has the right to request control, conditionality and precedence of its own needs. The EU instrument for Ukraine is besides not a simple transfer without criteria. The Council of the European Union stated on 24 Septemberthat payments are linked to the implementation of stages of the Plan of Ukraine, and Kiev has achieved 84 of the 95 required targets. Mechanisms can and must be sharpened. First, however, we request to describe honestly those that exist.
A "peaceful" border with a war-torn state
Miller's consequence to the argument that the defeat of Ukraine was not in the Polish interest was the most dangerous. The erstwhile Prime Minister stated: "Grajnyy with Russia and this is simply a very quiet border". Technically, Poland is actually bordering the Russian Federation through the princely region. However, the calm at a peculiar border crossing point does not say anything about Kremlin's strategical intentions.
Russia wages war against Ukraine, threatens NATO states, expands information pressures and uses hybrid tools. In fresh days Moscow threatened Poland with a consequence for actions concerning Królewiec. It is political shortsightedness to bring safety into the absence of an incidental at detention.
Polish realism does not require unconditional submission to Kiev. It requires a cool calculation. Independent Ukraine binds Russian forces and removes direct military force from a crucial part of the Polish border. Poland should support this state of affairs on its own terms: with control of expenditure, with the protection of agriculture, a tough policy of remembrance of the Volyn genocide and without giving up a sovereign vote.
Poland's interests require 2 hard rules
The first regulation is no money without an explicit purpose, control and settlement. Two: no illusions towards Russia. Trying to counter these rules is simply a false choice. It is possible to request work from Ukraine and at the same time to realize that the triumph of the Kremlin would worsen the safety of the Republic.
Miller posed an crucial question about the public penny, but weakened it with an unproven charge and thought of a "peaceful" border. Polish east policy cannot be a blank for Kiev or a lullaby with a mild neighbourhood of Russia. It must service Poland. Hard, smart and without another people's propaganda film.
