Late in the summertime of 2015, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the legendary words, "We can do this." There was a highest phase of the exile crisis, hundreds of thousands of migrants arrived in Germany.
Now, 10 years later, Angela Merkel is convinced that Germany has made crucial advancement in the integration of migrants. "It's a process, but so far we've achieved a lot. And what inactive needs to be done must be continued," said Chadecka politician in an interview for the ARD documentary.
2015: "We can do this"
Her "We Can Deal" Merkel reacted on 31 August 2015 to the news that 800,000 refugees are expected in Germany this year and thousands of refugees are heading from Hungary to Germany.
Today Merkel says, "It's going to be truly hard for me, it was clear to me." At the same time, as she points out, she has repeatedly wondered how much these words were used. At the time, she simply wanted to express that Germany was facing a serious challenge. She hoped for the German people.
It does not consider that its decision unduly burdened Germany. "I don't believe it. Germany is simply a strong country," she said in an interview with ARD.
"I was convinced that the Germans would deal with this," the erstwhile Chancellor added. She pointed out that the alternate would be to usage force to prevent refugees from coming to Germany. "I would never agree to that," she noted.
Speaking about the situation 10 years ago, she stated that she sometimes accused herself of not doing more for the population there between 2012 and 2013, erstwhile the civilian war in Syria was already ongoing.
AfD grew stronger
Angela Merkel besides admitted that her decision contributed to the emergence in the popularity of AfD – a organization classified by counterintelligence in part as far-right. "AfD surely became stronger thanks to this," said erstwhile head of the German government.
However, this was no reason not to make a decision that she felt was right and reasonable. Her decision besides led to disputes in the native CDU/CSU charade which do not foster the main task of integration.
Dissatisfied with integration
CDU Secretary General Carsten Linnemann draws critical conclusions 10 years after Merkel's legendary sentence. "Since 2015, we have received 6.5 million people, and presently little than half of them have jobs. I find it at least unsatisfactory," Linnemann told the paper "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung".
Now it is about stopping illegal migration into the social safety strategy and strengthening legal immigration into the labour market. "It must be the policy of the current government in 2025 – and it is so," he added.
