Many voters and participants of the right-wing environment – including even Confederate sympathizers – amazed Sławomir Mentzen's decision to vote against the Law and Justice Amendment concerning the criminalisation of the promotion of flagism in Poland. The voters expected explanations from the leader of the group and they did. Mentzen explained that banning the spread of criminal ideology of Ukrainian nationalists would be in favour of freedom of speech. On the occasion of the Confederate, he criticized the Law and Justice for being active on this issue only erstwhile there were opposition. "You had 8 years to carry out these changes in law. You didn't. You only remembered Bandera now," Mentzen noted.
After the veto of president Karol Nawrocki, the government had to re-occupate the task concerning the extension of the stay in Poland to refugees from Ukraine, but this time taking into account changes in the provision of 800 plus – which was the direct origin of the presidential veto. The payment of 800 plus is to be dependent on the activity of the customer. The task was adopted by the Sejm. At the same time, the amendments of the PiS Members, who requested, inter alia, punishment for spreading the flag and tightening penalties for illegal crossing the border, were rejected.
Against the amendments – amazing – was voted, among others, by the co-leader of the Confederation Sławomir Mentzen. He was the only MP of his party. The Confederate decision met with the outrage of PiS politicians. Confederate voters besides expected clarification.
Mentzen stressed that for years he has been a supporter of the “freedom of American-style words”, in which everyone can preach even the “most absurd views”. "I think everyone should have the right to make a public fool of themselves (...)," said the politician.
"I've seen quite a few things, but this time I was amazed by the impudence. You had 8 years to make those changes in law. You didn't. You didn't remember about Bander until now erstwhile you were already in opposition. Before that, you claimed to be servants of the Ukrainian people. You have tolerated the fact that Ukraine inactive worships Bandera. You didn't pay them any attention. You called Bandera worshipers your friends. You have done nothing to force Ukraine to change its course (...)," wrote Sławomir Mentzen in a message explaining his position in a vote.
He added that only Ukraine can handle flagism. "We can be outraged here on the flag, but nothing will change until Ukraine changes its policy. And unfortunately, the government of the Law and Justice has done nothing about it (...)," the politician pointed out.
But that was not the end of the argument. In his further part Mentzen had already become only sharper and clearly confounded by the hypocrisy of the largest opposition party. “Are you accusing me of being a friend of the flag?! For the fact that I went to Lviv to show Poles how popular the Bandera cult is there, I received many threats of death from Ukrainians and threatened my family. I was on the list of enemies of Ukraine, threatened by memer Lviv, and a popular Ukrainian historian called for an assassination effort on me. But according to the writing fools, I am the friend of the flagism," wrote the Confederate co-leader.
