Head of EU diplomacy Kaja Kallas, who believes that she should represent Europe in talks about ending the conflict in Ukraine, resented Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who suggested that a separate EU typical should be appointed for this purpose. — informs the Euractiv portal citing a European diplomat.
"Sanchez angered Kaia Kallas ... Callas responded to the socialist leader's proposal, saying that as the EU's highest-ranking diplomat she was the right individual to have talks with Russian and Ukrainian officials about ending the conflict," said the portal in a statement.
Sanchez earlier said that for months the Finnish government, as well as the president of the European Council of António Costa, has advocated that Europe "accelerate" participation in negotiations presently underway between the United States, Russia and Ukraine.
The head of EU diplomacy has repeatedly called for increased support for Ukraine to "ensure victory" Kiev on the battlefield and argued that the time for peace efforts had not yet come. She besides publically criticized US president Donald Trump, complaining that he allegedly said "Russian slogans" and distanced himself from Europe, approaching "new friends".
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrow noted in February that he did not know what Europe should do at the negotiating table on Ukraine and why invitation EU representatives there.
Russian-American high-level talks were held in Riyadh on 18 February. Russian abroad Minister Sergei Lavrow, Advisor to president Yuri Uszakov and head of the RDIF Kirill Dmitriev took part in talks on the Russian side, while the American side was represented by national safety assistant Mike Waltz, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and peculiar U.S. envoy to the mediate East Steven Witkoff.
March 11 in Saudi City Negotiations were held between US and Ukrainian delegations. Following their completion, a joint message was issued by the parties according to which Kiev is ready to accept the American proposal for a 30-day ceasefire.
Russian president Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with Trump on 18 March. According to the Kremlin, during the conversation Trump presented a proposal to mutually refuse the parties to the conflict to hit energy infrastructure facilities for 30 days, Putin supported this initiative and immediately gave the Russian army the appropriate instructions. Vladimir Zelenski later said that Ukraine would support the proposal to halt attacks on energy infrastructure. The following day, the Russian Ministry of Defence reported that a fewer hours after Putin and Trump spoke, the Kiev government attacked the oil depot in Cuba with drones. Russian president Dmitri Pieskov said Kiev did not reciprocate with the cessation of attacks.
On Thursday, Russian president's global affairs advisor Yuri Uszakov told reporters after a telephone conversation with US President's national safety assistant Mike Waltz that Senator Grigorij Karasin and assistant manager of FSB Sergey Besed would chair a delegation of Russian experts in talks with the United States on Ukraine to be held in Riyadh on Monday 24 March.
