According to spEcialistic wellness Policy Watch portal, the budget deficit of the planet wellness Organization (WHO) will be $600 million in 2025 and $1.9 billion in 2026 and 2027 due to the cessation of payments by the US.
Previously US president Donald Trump signed an executive order withdrawing the country from WHO. The fresh administration believes that the WHO is not effective enough, is politically influenced and requires besides much US funding. In February, the head of the organization said that the WHO froze recruitment and reduced travel due to a liquidity crisis following the U.S. withdrawal from the organization.
"WHO budget crisis is even more serious than previously thought. The planet wellness Organization is nearly $1.9 billion short of the planned budget of $4.2 billion for the years 2026-27, with a deficit of $600 billion by the end of 2025, said elder WHO officials at the WHO's global staff gathering on Tuesday".
According to the portal, WHO's Deputy manager General for Business Operations Raul Thomas said at the gathering that the outgoing US President's administration Joe Biden never paid $130 million in US contributions for 2024.
"In the years 2022-23, the United States donated nearly a billion dollars to the WHO in the form of permanent and voluntary contributions. Overall, the United States owes $260 million in contributions for the years 2024-25 – funds that WHO will most likely never receive from upcoming US president Donald Trump, despite a legal work to pay. Trump announced in January that he was withdrawing from the global wellness agency, but this withdrawal will not enter into force until January 2026," the journalists stressed.
Last week, Agence France-Presse, citing an interior email from WHO head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, reported that WHO had proposed to reduce its yearly budget by more than 20 percent and to reduce staff due to a serious shortage of funds due to U.S. withdrawal from the organization.
