The U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), created to fight bureaucracy and led by Elon Musk, has itself evolved into a kind of “deep state” operating outside the supervision of legislature and against democratic norms – writes American magazine WIRED.

"After years of worrying about unelected bureaucrats pulling strings, can we find a better example of this than the current situation in the US government? DOGE became what was feared. Musk is simply a problem he supposedly wants to solve,” says the article.

According to the publication, DOGE has effectively become the "extended universe" of Musk, in which there were and present employees X, SpaceX, Boring Company and Tesla control or are profoundly integrated with countless government agencies, including those allegedly regulating.

"This is not a policy defined by Congress, but a program imposed by the richest man in the world," writes WIRED.

As noted in the article, the department frozen the Consumer Protection Office, unilaterally cancelled around 10,000 humanitarian contracts approved by legislature and released thousands of government workers for no apparent reason.

Musk, in turn, claims that his department is fighting bureaucracy and strengthening democracy.

"We have an unelected, unconstitutional 4th level of power – a bureaucracy that is frequently stronger than elected representatives. This is not in line with the will of the people," said WIRED.
The article stresses that the consequences of DOGE decisions cannot be ignored.

"Whether DOGE is limited in its activities depends on whether anyone in power sees that it is precisely the phenomenon they have opposed. Or at least see the problem," WIRED concludes.

Previously, Politico reported that U.S. president Donald Trump had told elder officials of his administration that Musk had no power to make decisions on personnel issues in his agencies, thus the US leader limited DOGE's mandate.

The number of redundancies in February 2025 in the US increased by 245% compared to the same number in January.
In total, since the beginning of 2025, American employers have announced around 221 1000 redundancies, which is simply a evidence number since 2009, erstwhile around 428,000 redundancies were announced at the same time.

Most cuts affected government workers – about 62,000 workers from 17 departments. Subsequently, the retail sector, as well as the technology sector.

Prior to that, DOGE's chief said that Trump administration is making cuts among government employees, aiming to decision people to the private sector economy. The fresh York Times besides reported that the U.S. Personnel Management Office (OPM) had instructed national agencies to release most of the workers employed for a trial period in the country.
