Media: Canada wants to buy respective HIMARS from the US despite Trump's threats

Canada's armed forces propose to the government of this country to acquisition respective HIMARS (MLRS) rocket launchers from the US, despite U.S. president Donald Trump's demands that the northern neighbour become the 51st U.S. state “ Ottawa Citizen reported, citing representatives of the defence industry.

"Canadian Armed Forces want Liberal government to buy HIMARS produced in the US", says the publication.

According to the newspaper, the Canadian Armed Forces offer the acquisition of respective HIMARS under the American abroad Military Sales (FMS) program. The acquisition contract is expected to be awarded on a non-competitive basis.

When asked by Ottawa Citizen why the Canadian government is considering buying weapons from a country that threatens to annex it, Canadian Department of defence spokesperson Kened Sadiku said that transportation decisions for Canadian armed forces are made on the basis of national safety priorities. Sadiku stressed that the government of this country closely monitors trade relations with Washington and assesses possible implications for ongoing projects.

The publication notes that Canadian military command has close ties with its American counterparts and is reluctant to distract from the United States. The defence manufacture typical told the paper that Canadian military command is “deaf” to a threat from Washington.

Trump had previously announced that it would rise duties on all imports of steel and aluminium, including Canadian imports, to 25%, which sparked Ottawa's sharp reaction. In response, the Government of Canada announced US goods work of $29.8 billion (US$20.7 billion), including steel and aluminium products, computers, sports equipment and water heaters, with effect from March 14.

Trump previously referred to Canada's resigned Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as a "governor of the large state of Canada" among the controversy surrounding the possible imposition of duties by the United States on Canadian goods. Trump later said that Canada could avoid trade duties imposed by Washington and receive military protection if it joined the United States as the 51st state. Trudeau assured that Trump would never annex Canada, despite the statements of the American leader of the future collapse of the Canadian economy.
