
The Sejm is active in the celebration of the European Day against Discrimination of Persons with Disabilities and the Day of Dignity of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities, which falls on 5 May and is simply a peculiar occasion to draw attention to dignity, equality and the right of persons with disabilities to participate full in social, household and professional life. These days remind us that equality of rights and opportunities is not a privilege – it is the fundamental right of all man.
On May 5th in the Hall of the Column of the Sejm, Deputy Marshal Monika Wielichowska opened a discussion on the situation of people with disabilities under the motto "Glority is in Us", whose honorary guests and co-organizers were members of the Association of Intellectual Disability with Krosna. The gathering was a space for civilian dialog where citizens talk about needs and share what has improved their lives in fresh years.
– Today's vacation is an chance to remind the public that people with intellectual disabilities are among us and are equally important. They love, play, cry, endure and conflict with weaknesses as well – said Monika Wielichowska.
During the gathering crucial voices, demands and ideas for changes were heard, coming from people with disabilities, which will be the beginning of joint work for a better, more accessible and fairer Poland.
The initiator of the event was MP Iwona Hartwich. Mr Magdalena Kośko was besides present.
The symbol of today's celebrations was an orange ribbon, visible in the seismic hall and among the participants of the meeting. This colour means solidarity with people with intellectual disabilities. It is associated with energy, warmth and hope for a better tomorrow. It symbolizes courage, strength and determination in the fight for a planet without barriers. It is besides a colour that attracts attention, encouraging reflection on what we can change. Orange ribbon is simply a sign of support, solidarity and commitment to action.
Dignity Day People with Intellectual Disability, celebrated in Poland since 1999, is an initiative aimed not only at social education, but besides at building a real change in the perception of people with intellectual disabilities. In conjunction with the European Day against Discrimination of Persons with Disabilities, it is simply a strong appeal to all to make a society where diversity does not exclude but enriches.
