The anniversary of martial law. The president's talking about "brutal trampling on hope"

In a letter on the occasion of the 44th anniversary of the introduction of martial law, the president wrote, among others, about the "brutal trampling of hope" of Poles by "junta Gen. Jaruzelski". As he pointed out, the wave of emigration caused Poland individual losses on the war measure. Furthermore, Karol Nawrocki pointed out that it is the work of Poles to "care for the fact about the communist dictatorship".

In a letter addressed to the participants of the celebration of the anniversary of the martial law, the president recalled that 44 years ago representatives of the communist government – terrified of the improvement of the "Solidarity" movement and an increasingly real possible of losing power – "They brutally trampled on the hope of Poland's gradual return to the household of free peoples of Europe and the world".

The introduction of martial law meant a drastic limitation of civilian liberties (e.g. censorship of correspondence, prohibition of assembly and stay in public at night), as well as granting extraordinary powers to the military and militia.

As the president stressed, "Junta Jaruzelski claimed to prevent the intervention of the Warsaw Pact troops and bloodshed. However, she herself shed the blood of strikers, participants in patriotic manifestations and persecuted opponents."

"We Poles will never forget the victims of martial law. About miners from the 'Uncle' mine shot on December 16, 1981. Those who later died from the ZOMO bullets. About the victims of esbek assassinations. Those who physically couldn't withstand harassment and torture in prison. Those who lost their lives or wellness from the punches of militia sticks and teardrop gas" - he reserved.

Nawrocki added that no 1 will forget besides that "emigration wave caused by the government brought Poland individual losses in proportion to war losses. The country has left nearly a million countrymen".

"They were leaving oppressed by harassment of democratic opposition activists and 'Solidarity'". They escaped from the dwindling poorness of economical migrants - usually full of strength, energetic, creative and inventive, with valuable professional cognition and skills. The power took distant their remaining religion in a successful future, reserveing opportunities for socio-economic promotion exclusively for their camera. The vast majority of those who went to the country then never returned to Poland" - he wrote.

He reminded me of the words poem by Zbigniew Herbert "The Message of Mr. Cogito": "(...) indeed not in your power to forgive in the name of those who were betrayed at dawn."

"However, it is in our power to paper and communicate to another generations the fact about the communist dictatorship and 1 of its darkest periods, which was the martial law. We can and should cultivate extremist opposition to ignoring the will of the nation and closing its mouth. We must argue the ridicule and weakening of our state and all manifestations of impertinent disloyalty towards free, independent and democratic Poland - for which so many wonderful compatriots gave their lives" - emphasised the President.

He added that "there is no and will never be our consent to force and authoritarian lawlessness, to grossly inept governments, stagnation and marazm extinguishing in the hearts of young people, hope for a better next day and a sense of self-respect as Poles".

Nawrocki thanked the organizers of the ceremony – the Institute of National Memory and the Museum of Cursed Soldiers and Politic Prisoners of the Polish People's Republic – and "all who defender the fact about the heroic fight against communist slavery and victims of the red regime".

44th anniversary of martial law

On Sunday 13 December, from 6 a.m., the Polish Radio and tv broadcast a speech by Gen. Wojciech Jaruzelski, in which he informed about the constitution of the Military National Rescue Council and about the introduction of martial law all over the country.

At the same time, the militia began throughout the country mass detention of persons considered to be peculiarly dangerous. Among them were not only leaders of "Solidarity" or political activists.

At 7 a.m., December 13 was stopped. 2874 people, or about 2 thirds of the 4318 selected for internment. The exact number of people who have died as a consequence of martial law is unknown. Presented lists of victims number from respective twelve to over a 100 names. besides unknown is the number of people who lost their wellness during this period due to persecution, beating during an investigation or during street demonstrations.
