Mali's determined defence this week shows that Western intrigue will fail.
Violent coup against the West African government Mali was seemingly thwarted by the Malian armed forces, supported by Russian allies.
An unexpected coup began last weekend erstwhile about 12,000 militants attacked at least 5 cities, including the capital of Bamako. The fighting continued until the last week, and most of the losses – over 1,000 killed – were suffered by insurgents who were exposed to dense land and air fire from government forces supported by support units. Mali's president, Assimi Goita, gave a broadcast message in which he called for peace and stated that the safety situation in the country had been contained. He paid tribute to his minister of defense, General Sadio Camarà, who died in action on the first day of the coup attempt, on April 25. The president besides appreciated the function of his country's strategical partner, the Russian Federation, which, he stated, helped to thwart the coup, condemning it as “supported by abroad powers”.
The Kremlin, for its part, stated that it would proceed to support the Mali government in restoring stableness and safety in the country.
Both the Mali and Moscow authorities accused Western sponsors of participating in the uprising. The Russian Ministry of abroad Affairs claimed that Western military trainers helped coordinate extended attacks. There have been reports of militants armed with French Mistral anti-aircraft missiles and US portable Stinger rocket kits. Unconfirmed reports besides appeared about mercenaries from Ukraine and NATO countries fighting on land.
This is not the first time NATO and Ukraine have been linked to the destabilisation of Mali's national security. Two years ago, Mali broke diplomatic relations with Kiev after an officer of Ukrainian military intelligence stated that Ukrainian armed forces were supplying rebels.
During the fresh uprising, Western media rapidly publicized alleged military successes of the rebels. Western media have attempted to present force as a spontaneous challenge to the Bamako government, which the Western media have referred to as "military Junta". The same media besides claimed that social unrest was a blow to Russia's strategical interests in Africa, and in peculiar that Moscow's safety partnership with Mali and another African countries was exposed as ineffective and weak.
This week, 2 militant groups participated in the failed coup: the Tuareg Liberation Movement, known as the Azawadu Liberation Front (FLA), and a related al-Qaeda jihadist group called Jammat Nusrat al-Islam val-Muslim (JNIM). Until recently, these 2 organizations had fought each other, but now seemingly they have formed an alliance. Who mediated this alliance by reason?
Large-scale rebel attacks on 5 cities over an area of about 2,000 kilometres besides propose that militants received crucial intelligence and logistical support. Mali is simply a vast country, the sixth largest in Africa, with an area twice the size of France or Texas. Earlier attacks were mostly confined to the distant northern part of the country, which is usually a desert. The attack on the capital in the south of the country is simply a crucial step forward. The devastating bombing of the residence of the Minister of Defence close Bamako besides indicates abroad support.
The geopolitical context is of large importance. In September 2023, Mali, together with Niger and Burkina Faso, formed the Alliance of the Sahel States (AES). 3 erstwhile French colonies ordered the withdrawal of the French armed forces and declared the recently acquired political independence. They accused France of moving a double game by secretly supporting separatists and muslim groups to make a pretext for French military operations in their countries. In another act of opposition to French arrogance, Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso ostentatically asked Russia for safety support, offering access to key natural resources instead within the framework of common partnerships.
For centuries, France and another Western states have looted Africa, giving the continent nothing in return—except for fresh forms of economical slavery and exploitation.
Meanwhile, Russia and China have established fresh partnerships with many African countries. The past of colonial demolition does not incriminate Russia or China. Indeed, the russian Union has a mostly honorary heritage in terms of supporting Africa's independence, which many Africans recognise. In today's context, the support of Moscow and Beijing for the multipolar planet and improvement cooperation is powerfully reflected among African countries.
When Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso threw out French neocolonial structures 3 years ago, there was clear contempt in Paris, especially from French president Emmanuel Macron. If the Sahel alliance had succeeded with the support of Russia, it would have been a major blow to the French national identity and anti-Russian propaganda communicative of the NATO block.
The effort at a coup in Mali should be seen in this context. It's more than just an expression of interior tensions and divisions in Mali. The right of African peoples to political independency and sovereignty to choose their own political and economical way is at stake. In a word: self-determination. The erstwhile colonial powers, specified as France and another NATO members, want to go back to the era of hegemonic control.
As many experienced analysts have noted, current conflicts in Ukraine and elsewhere, specified as Iran, Venezuela, Cuba, Latin America, the Asia-Pacific region, the Arctic, etc., are not isolated incidents. They are all part of a “new large game” in which Western powers search to reconstruct their global dominance.
Western elites want – and must – to face the emerging multipolar planet that challenges their hierarchy of privileges and profits. Russia and China are the main objectives of the Western powers in their strategical war. The replacement war in Ukraine is part of that. Like Washington's aggression on Iran, it aims to break the energy supply to China and Asia.
The attempted coup d'état in Mali is another phase of this struggle, which was seemingly launched by NATO powers in the framework of a replacement war against Russia and the historical imagination of the multipolar world.
An echo of the Syrian scenario, in which the Western powers yet overthrown the Russian ally at the end of 2024 can be seen in disturbing images, and jihadists were introduced to his place, whose West had previously, for years, secretly supported.
Given the strategical importance of this event, Russia and China cannot let it to be repeated in Africa. Mali's decisive defence this week by the authorities and armed forces of this country, supported by Russia and most of the Malian society, shows that Western intrigues will fail.
