Enhanced Regional Connectivity

This new route is part of Maldivian’s ongoing efforts to enhance connectivity between the northern Maldives and key cities in India. Hanimaadhoo is an emerging regional hub. The airport is strategically located in the northernmost part of the Maldives. It offers seamless access to both tourists and residents in this region.

Ibrahim Iyas, Managing Director at Maldivian, expressed enthusiasm for the new service, stating:

“We are thrilled to expand our network with the introduction of the Hanimaadhoo-Bangalore route. This new service not only enhances travel options for our passengers but also strengthens the cultural and economic ties between the Maldives and India. With our existing services between Trivandrum and Hanimaadhoo, we are further solidifying our commitment to connecting the northern islands with key regional destinations. We look forward to welcoming travelers on board and providing them with our exceptional service.”

This move aligns with the Maldivian government’s strategic vision to decentralize economic activity and tourism. The non-stop flights ensure that the northern Maldives benefits from increased international connectivity.

Boosting Tourism and Trade Between India and the Maldives

India has long been a key tourism market for the Maldives, with a growing number of Indian travelers choosing the island nation for vacations, honeymoons, and wellness retreats. With this new flight route, tourists from Bangalore and surrounding areas will have direct access to the pristine beaches and luxury resorts of the northern Maldives.

Conversely, Maldivian travelers will gain improved access to Bangalore, a major IT and business hub. This enables stronger business ties, medical tourism, and educational opportunities.

This launch comes at a time when Maldivian airlines are increasingly focusing on enhancing bilateral air travel between India and the Maldives. Maldivian currently operates direct services to several Indian cities, including Trivandrum and Kochi. The airline also operated flights between Male and Bengaluru until recently. However, the flights ended in January 2025.

India remains to be one of the top source markets for Maldivian tourism and a key trading partner. This new service will further strengthen the diplomatic and economic relationship between the two nations.
