Luxembourg changes its constitution

The absolute feminist ideology finds further followers. France has given the ‘example’ followed by Luxembourg.

If the draft had been adopted by Parliament, Luxembourg would have become the second country in the world, after France, which, by virtue of constitutional law, allows abortion.

In the first vote, the Chamber of Deputies supported the inclusion of the “freedom of abortion” in the Luxembourg Constitution by a large majority. If that happens, the second vote in June will be decided.

On 3 March, the draft supported as many as 48 MEPs, with only six Members opposed and 2 abstentions.

In the population of 660 000 people in Luxembourg, it is legal to "abortion on request" until the 12th week of pregnancy; in July 2025, the work to wait 3 days and consult before abortion was abolished. At a later phase of pregnancy, killing a kid is legal if it is found to be ‘a fatal defect’. According to the latest available data, 713 abortions were performed there in 2023. This represents an increase compared to erstwhile years. With a fertility rate of only 1.25 per woman, Luxembourg belongs to the lowest birth rate countries in Europe.

In accordance with Article 131 of the Constitution of Luxembourg, the amendment of the Basic Act requires 2 votes in the Chamber of Deputies at least 3 months apart with a majority of 2/3 members. Whether the anticipation of abortion becomes a constitutional fact will be decided by another vote, which may happen at the beginning of June this year.
