Luxembourg wants to put the "right to abortion" in the Constitution. The Church warns against civilization's fall

There is simply a heated debate in Luxembourg, at stake not only in the change of law, but in the very foundation on which our civilization is based. The Parliament of this tiny but rich country is considering including in the Constitution "the right to voluntary abortion" and the right to contraception. If adopted, Luxembourg will become the second country in Europe after France, which will constitutionally warrant the anticipation of killing unborn children.

The strongest voice of opposition came from the Catholic Church. Archbishop of Luxembourg, Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich SJ, in an RTL radio interview, warned that the revision of the Constitution would be a “sad day in Luxembourg's history”. Hierarch expressed concern that specified action would impose a single ideological imagination on citizens, which could lead to a regulation on freedom of speech and, consequently, to a distortion of democracy:

“If there is no longer freedom of speech, [...] we have a liberal democracy that has adopted the attributes of a totalitarian system”

said the cardinal.

In the Archbishop's opinion, entering abortion into the Constitution will not be a neutral safeguard of the "laws", but an effort at ideological coercion that leaves no area for opposition to conscience.

Alarming numbers: less children, more abortions

Statistics show a dramatic picture. In 2023 713 abortions were carried out in Luxembourg – this is simply a increasing number compared to erstwhile years. The fertility rate there is only 1.25 children per woman. This is 1 of the lowest results in Europe, showing the demographic crisis.

A summary of these 2 facts – the increasing number of abortions and the dramatic fall in births – leads to hard questions. Does not the state, which, in the face of demographic collapse, alternatively of supporting household and motherhood, constitutionally warrant abortion, condemn itself to slow extinction?

Europe at the turn

In March 2024 France was the first country in the planet to enter the “right to abortion” in its constitution. Supporters of change in Luxembourg do not hide that they follow the French model. This is not just an interior discussion of 1 state, but part of a wider European trend that puts the "right to abortion" above the right to life – the foundation of all civilization.

Marches for life – thousands of Europeans say no

While political elites are pushing for fresh legal solutions, the streets of European cities are filled with life defenders. On September 20, the 21st was held in Germany. March for Life. About 4000 people attended Berlin, 3000 in Cologne. There were strong slogans on the banners:

“Abortion is bad”
“Without children there is no future”
“Human dignity knows no age”
“Integration begins before birth”

Bishops, priests, consecrated people and families with children joined the participants. At the same time, the first March for Life in Switzerland was organized in Zurich.

Right to life – a foundation that cannot be relativised

Life begins with conception and lasts until natural death. No constitutions or parliaments can change that. Attempting to give abortion the position of basic law is not only a moral mistake but besides a political 1 – it destroys the foundation on which human dignity is based.

The past of Europe teaches that civilizations fall erstwhile they begin to negate their own values. The discussion in Luxembourg is not only a legal dispute, but a question about the future of the continent as a whole: will Europe proceed to be a culture of life, or will it die?
