Volodymyr Zelenski's law firm asked the lawyer General of Ukraine to consider a criminal case against Alaksandrov Lukashenko. The impetus was the appeal of the Forum of the Democratic Forces of Belarus, which wants to prosecute Minsk's leader for the function of the government in Russia's war against Ukraine. For Poland it is simply a simple signal: the east flank cannot live in a planet of impunity.
Appeal of the Belarusian opposition
According to Reuters, president Volodymyr Zelenski's office sent a letter to the lawyer General of Ukraine in the case of Alaksandra Lukashenko. The aim is to consider criminal proceedings against the Belarusian leader. Polsat News, reporting reports from the agency, indicated that this was a consequence to the appeal of oppositionists from the Forum of Democratic Forces of Belarus.
According to Reuters, Belarusian Democrats wrote to Zelenski in May. They demanded that Kiev deal with Lukashenko's work for his regime's engagement in force against Ukraine, including for cooperation with Russia and for actions described by the opposition as war crimes, genocide and state terror. At this stage, we are talking about the consideration of the case by the Ukrainian prosecutor, not the judgement or the determination of criminal liability.
Minsk as Moscow's base
The most crucial fact is known from the beginning of a full-scale war. In February 2022 Russia utilized the territory of Belarus as 1 of the backdrops of the attack on Ukraine. Thus, the Lukashenko government was not a neutral neighbour who accidentally found himself at the border of war. He was the political and military base of Moscow.
This besides matters to Poland. Belarus under the regulation of Lukashenka is part of the Russian strategy of force on our region: from military force at the border, by dependence on the Kremlin, to the usage of the state as a tool of destabilisation. Whoever pretends that Minsk is simply a stand-alone player today, does not realize the realities of Central and east Europe.
Child Affairs and State Responsibility
In the context of the appeal there is besides the issue of Ukrainian children transported to Belarus. The Humanitarian investigation laboratory at Yale School of Public wellness had previously reported that more than 2,400 children from Ukraine went to Belarus. Ukrainian organisations and authorities have long shown that specified activities must be explored as part of a broader policy jointly pursued by Russia and its Belarusian ally.
You request precision here. The specified initiation or consideration of proceedings is not yet a conviction. But without naming political and legal responsibility, there is no real deterrence. Moscow and Minsk have been investigating the West for years: they check whether the price is paid for aggression, repression and participation in the war or just hear more diplomatic messages.
Poland rate
Poland has its own business in this case. It is not a motion against Kiev or an emotional solidarity with the Belarusian opposition. It's about the safety order at our border. If a government that puts Russia's territory into attack later returns to political play without an account, then any subsequent blackmail against Warsaw, Vilnius or Riga becomes more likely.
Belarusians fighting the dictatorship of Lukashenko realize the thing that Western salons frequently displace: safety starts with responsibility. A country that helps an aggressor cannot be treated as an average partner for method conversations. And Poland should support all realistic step that weakens the Russian-Belarusian force mechanics on our part of Europe.
However, the government must not be confused with the nation. Many Belarusians paid for opposition to Lukashenko with prison, emigration, and household breakdown. All the more reason to be clear: Belarus is not the problem. The problem is the power that tied you to the Kremlin's business. The settlement of this power is besides in the Polish national interest.
