Modern technological and engineering developments have allowed projects to be created that can revolutionise the sailing and environmental sector. Students of Wroclaw University of Technology, have taken on a challenge that can be recorded in the past of engineering and sailing. As part of the Microtransat competition, a group of young engineers search to make an autonomous boat that will sail across the Atlantic Ocean, utilizing only solar and wind energy.
This innovative task requires combining experience in robotics with sailing knowledge. Students of Wrocław University of Technology, led by task coordinator Wojciech Bohdan, must overcome many obstacles to accomplish the goal. 1 of the biggest challenges is to guarantee the safety and reliability of boats, which will gotta last hard weather and water conditions.
The boat plan is the work of the championship. The hull made of stainless steel and fiberglass guarantees durability and lightness. The photovoltaic panel, mounted on board, provides the energy needed to operate systems. Moreover, failure of 1 panel will not disturb the remaining, allowing months of autonomous cruise.
All systems on the boat are designed to let distant monitoring and correction of the course. Satellite and GPS systems let constant control of the ongoing cruise. This is crucial due to the fact that the way from the Canary Islands to the Caribbean, scheduled for November 2025, could take 2 to 5 months.
However, the squad faces many challenges. Unforeseeable weather, storms, and the hazard of entangling in fishing nets are just any of the problems that request to be solved. To minimize the risk, students carefully analyse ocean maps and plan a way distant from intensely frequented trails.
According to data, about 100,000 tonnes of fish waste are thrown into the seas and oceans each year. The Solaris boat plan is not only a method challenge but besides a applicable solution to environmental protection. Solar and wind energy are sources of clean and reliable energy, making them perfect for usage in this kind of project.
Students of Wrocław University of Technology are aware that their task may be a breakthrough for the sailing and environmental sector.
