In fresh times, erstwhile Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has been amazingly firm – for a erstwhile banker – lobbying for additional taxes on banks, which, thanks to advanced interest rates, evidence profits in Poland. On Friday, October 17, the government voted on a task that raises the CIT taxation for these institutions. Surprisingly, Morawiecki... voted against the raise. This was pointed out to him on social media by organization leader Together Adrian Zandberg.
Mateusz Morawiecki, erstwhile president of the Board of the West Bank of WBK (now Santander Bank Polska) in 2007-2015, has late had many opportunities to get a good look at his erstwhile colleagues by profession, lobbying for stronger taxation burdens for banks.
"Banks in Poland evidence record profits! Therefore, a bank taxation must be introduced to guarantee that the financial sector contributes honestly to the improvement of the state and the support of citizens" – he wrote on the website X Morawiecki in late August.
It so seemed that the PiS MP would vote for the CIT increase for the banks proposed by the Polish government. On Friday, October 17, there was a vote in the Sejm on this matter. The task passed, but Morawiecki voted... against!
This did not escape the attention of another politicians – including Adrian Zandberg, who immediately pointed out the erstwhile Prime Minister's hypocrisy. "Remember how Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki was in favour of taxing extraordinary bank profits? I guess it's not. Together with Mentzen and the majority of the PiS, he has just voted against the higher taxation for banks," wrote the X organization Chief Together.
Morawiecki explained his decision very quickly. According to the erstwhile Prime Minister, the government's task is simply a ‘micro’ action, not a taxation that he himself advocated.
"Mr. Adrian, do not usage inexpensive populisms. I was the first politician to postulate windfall tax. I'm not in favour of a grandfatherly and minimal state. How we are to pass something is only the best versions for Poland, not for German or banking lobbyists. How the taxation for banks is only a decent one, not a micro one" - Morawiecki corrected.
“Mr. Matthew, don’t make specified a frenzy, due to the fact that it’s dangerous for your spine. I would be pleased to vote for a more harsh solution to banks. But that is no reason to vote for their profits present — and that was the consequence of today's PiS vote” wrote Zandberg, who seemingly did not accept the arguments of the erstwhile Prime Minister.
