In the calendar of different holidays, I found that on November 19th we can celebrate: global Men's Day, Women's Entrepreneurship Day, Toilet Day, global Children's force Prevention Day, Geographical Information strategy Day and planet Obstructive Day of Chronic Lung Disease. Everyone will admit that many of these opportunities for 1 day – gloomy with us mostly – November. Plus, I have no thought how to celebrate a day like the Toilet? Go around the toilets with a wide arch? How to live, especially to celebrate? However, there is an anniversary, which, although not a holiday, is worth reminding and possibly even celebrating.
It was November 19, 1985, in Geneva (in my beloved Switzerland) that Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev met. Although the gathering lasted for 2 days, it began just then. It was the first American-Soviet summit since 1979. The gathering was undoubtedly a landmark minute in relations between the US and the USSR. Both leaders, despite ideological differences, saw the request to limit the tensions of the Cold War.
The talks focused on atomic weapons, safety in Europe and human rights issues. Although no binding treaties were then signed, a climate of common trust was created and a dialog process was initiated, which led to a real simplification in atomic arsenals in subsequent years. The very fact that Reagan and Gorbachev sat together at the table was of large symbolic importance – he showed the planet that it was possible to deescalate and search peaceful coexistence, which became 1 of the turning points for the end of the Cold War. Then (11–12 October 1986) there was a not very successful gathering of leaders in Reykjavik. Both leaders considered almost complete decommissioning of atomic arsenals, which would be an unprecedented event.
However, negotiations broke down erstwhile Reagan refused to resign from the SDI programme ("Star Wars"), which Gorbachev considered a threat to strategical balance. Despite the fiasco, the Reykjavik summit turned out to be a breakthrough – he showed that atomic weapons simplification was a real target, and a year later it led to the signing of the Treaty on atomic Weapons simplification in Washington.
