More and more parties are victorious with the slogan: "Democracy – yes, liberalism – no." By "liberalism", however, they mean not economic, but social liberalism. However, specified separation of concepts is absurd – liberalism and democracy are inseparable. Liberal democracy or democratic liberalism are concepts utilized interchangeably. Liberals, by definition, accept the principles of democracy, and a actual politician cannot reject liberal principles.
Right-wing parties, promoting the slogan of "non-liberal democracy", are trying to make the impression that the will of the majority can be reconciled with limiting individual freedom. In fact, the aim is to legitimise actions leading to the dismantling of democratic institutions: limiting civilian rights, undermining the independency of courts or subjecting the media to power. "non-liberal democracy" is simply a rhetorical tool that is designed to put the public to sleep and mask the drifting processes towards authoritarianism.
It is not adequate to say, "You can vote, so you have democracy." The electoral procedure itself does not make a democratic state. Democracy is more than a common, equal and secret vote. It besides respects number rights, independent tripartition of power, constitutionalism, organization pluralism and guarantees freedom of speech, media and assembly. Without all this, democracy becomes an extortion, and the power of the majority rapidly transforms into a tool of oppression.
