Left between explanation and reality. Why is he losing to PiS?

In the latest episode of The Left Look! Iwona Wyszogrodka and Ziemowit Szczerek tried to specify the modern left in Poland. The starting point was a reflection on the heritage of social movements that won workers' rights, wellness insurance, or the ban on kid labour. Today, as Honest pointed out, these conquests seem obvious, but their importance inactive requires reminders.

The speakers pointed out that the left should cover the full spectrum of needs – from basic, economical (bottom of Maslow pyramid) to higher order needs specified as acceptance, representation of minorities or the right to self-fulfillment. The problem of modern groups is, however, a tear: any focus solely on social demands, others on identity issues, neglecting the middle, or mediate class.

Szczerek emphasized that the PiS managed to take over the language of left-wing postulates – he talked about dignity of work, exploitation, support for families – and thus built wide support. The Left, in his opinion, besides frequently operates the theoretical language, separated from the real experiences of people. "They imagine a people they do not know," he said, pointing to the deficiency of contact with the everydayness of voters.

Honesty warned that specified an approach leads to a blurring of the border between left and populism.

Wyszogrodka recalled that left-wing is primarily solidarity with those who have worse – from tenants to migrants or non-heteronormatives. In this sense, as highlighted in the programme, the existence of the left is more needed present than ever, especially in the face of the dominance of the Law and the pragmatism of the Civic Platform.

The debate in "On Left Look" showed that the question of the meaning of the left in Poland is not academic entertainment, but a real political problem. If leftist groups want to regain meaning, they must go beyond dogma and learn to talk the language of reality – so that their demands are not only right but understandable to voters.
