The largest military operation involving air-desant troops, conducted by the Allied
In the marketplace Garden operation air-desant troops played a key role, including 2 American divisions (101st and 82nd), the British 1st Division and the Polish 1st Parade Brigade. The brigade was created by General Stanisław Sosabowski, a prominent officer of the pre-war Polish Army and defender of Warsaw in 1939. Thanks to his determination, 1 of the best units of the Polish Armed Forces in the West was created, considered elite and innovative.
Polish paratroopers were trained for a mission to occupied Poland, but it never took place. Instead, the Brigade took part in the battles in the Driel-Arnhem area, which are part of the marketplace Garden operation. The first parachute landing of Polish soldiers took place on 21 September on the confederate shore of the Rhine. In an effort to support General Urquhart's laped British 1st Airborne Division, who was to take the bridge at Arnhem, Polish paratroopers encountered strong opposition from the Germans. Errors in planning and strong German defence caused the operation to neglect the Allied.
