After Donald Trump won the presidential election on 5 November 2024, many left-wing social platform users X decided to decision its activity to Bluesky platform. What is Bluesky and why is it gaining popularity?

Bluesky: a fresh alternate to social media

Bluesky is simply a decentralized social platform, created by erstwhile Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, in 2019. Its aim is to give users more control over data and privacy, eliminating the centralisation characteristic of conventional social media. The platform is based on an AT protocol that allows interoperability between different social networks.

Following the announcement of presidential election results in which Donald Trump defeated Kamala Harris, many left-wing Twitter users expressed discontent with the direction the platform is heading under Elon Musk.

During the week after the election, Bluesky recorded an influx of 1.25 million fresh users, expanding its base to 15 million – we learn from the fresh York Post.

Why do users choose Bluesky?

Bluesky offers an environment resembling the old Twitter, with a chronological layout of posts and more control over content. The platform focuses on the moderation and user safety, which attracts those seeking alternatives to the X platform, which under Muska was accused of spreading disinformation and favoring circumstantial political views.

The behaviour of left-wing users is nothing fresh in the media world. 4 years ago, erstwhile the presidential election was won by Joe Biden many people with conservative views moved to social media created by, among others, Donald Trump himself.
