The head of the Italian Defence General Staff, General Luciano Portolano, as quoted by the Agency, explained that an aircraft destroyed as a consequence of the attack, which belonged to the Italian contingent, ‘was a essential component for operating and was deployed on a base to guarantee the continuity of operations’.
General Portolano added that the Italian contingent has been preventively relieved in fresh days as part of the steps taken in relation to the situation in the region. He pointed out that the personnel who remained on the base were carrying out the tasks essential for the mission.
Previously, after the Iranian attack on the Italian base in Irbil, Iraq, half of the soldiers were withdrawn from there.
