Unplanned gathering of leaders of 3 different political circles in 1 pub? Sounds like the beginning of a joke, but it truly happened – and caused a storm. On Saturday evening at the Toruń bar Sławomir Mentzena sat at 1 table: the owner himself, Rafał Trzaskowski and Radosław Sikorski. The latter, according to TVN24, was to lead to this different situation.
It all started with a loud debate by Sławomir Mentzen and Rafał Trzaskowski, which was followed by as many as 600,000 viewers on the Internet. This event was widely commented on, and emotions did not drop even after it was over. After the conversation, politicians went – together with Radosław Sikorski – to Mentzen's bar, which was documented on recordings published by the head of the MFA.
Sikorski posted a short video from the pub on social media, signing it with the slogan: “For Poland that unites, it does not divide”. Sounds like a manifesto? For many – like provocation.
Who truly asked for a beer?
According to TVN24 writer Artur Molada, Radosław Sikorski was in Włocławek on Saturday, where he promoted the candidacy of Rafał Trzaski. He then went to Toruń, to his well-known Mentzen bar. This was not his first visit – he had previously appeared there, among others, in 2024, joking at the time that he "could enter due to the fact that he is not on the blacklist".
That evening, Sikorski had a reserved table from which he watched the broadcast of the Trzaskowski debate with Mentzen. erstwhile he found out Mentzen was besides going to the premises, he contacted Trzaskovsky's staff. As TVN24 claims, he was to initiate a joint gathering at the bar.
“With Nawrocki I would besides go for a beer”
Initially, Sławomir Mentzen planned to take another place, distant from KO politicians. Eventually, however, he sat at their table, which immediately sparked controversy – both among Confederate supporters and their opponents. The leader of the group was hit by a wave of criticism, including from his own erstwhile and current organization colleagues.
Mentzen responded to the allegations with an entry on the X portal (formerly Twitter): ‘Z Nawrocki would have gone for a beer, too, but he didn't. I don't realize what any people mean. I don't belong to the mob, I don't belong to a cult. I'm going straight. I will not be enrolled in any of your camps. And politicians should be able to usually talk to each other.” – he wrote.
Spontaneity or political theater?
Although the gathering was informal and, as the participants emphasize, was not planned, many people see deeper meaning in it. Was it truly about random "beer after debate"? Or was it a conscious decision to show that divisions in Polish politics could be suspended for at least a moment?
Regardless of intentions, photos and recordings from the meeting, the net and the media rapidly ran, provoking a lively discussion. There were voices of outrage, but besides those that praised the motion of openness and dialog over divisions.
