Cross on Giewont without lighting

The Cross on Giewonta will not be illuminated
Thursday, on the anniversary of the death of St John Paul II. The reason is very hard conditions in the Tatras,
including a advanced avalanche hazard and closure of routes; the installation that is already at the top will not be snowed.

According to the manager of TPN Szymon Ziobrowski, a temporary cross lighting strategy was already installed at the top of the Giewont, which was to be launched remotely on 2 April at 21.37 and symbolically illuminate the cross per minute. The lamps covered about a 1.5-metre layer of snow, and under current conditions no 1 will climb to the top to catch it from the installation.

– Due to the current conditions – high, 4th degree of avalanche danger, hard situation in the area and the current closure of the trails – we will not decide to send workers of the Tatra National Park to the summit of Giewont in order to open and prepare the installation. This means that the lighting will not be switched on in the current situation," explained the park manager.
