Donald Trump called on Wednesday for "immediate negotiations" with Denmark on "the discussion of Greenland's takeover by the United States". During his speech at the planet economical Forum in Davos, however, he declared for the first time that he did not intend to usage military force to accomplish this goal.
– I won't. Now everybody says, "Oh, that's good." People thought I'd usage force. I don't gotta usage force. I don't want to usage force. I will not usage force," he stressed.
At the same time, Trump did not alleviate political pressure. A fewer days earlier, he threatened with fresh duties against 8 NATO states in connection with the Greenland dispute, and in Davos stressed that Europe had a choice. So they have a choice. They can say yes, and we'll be very grateful. Or they could say "no," and we would remember," he said.
Donald Trump's speech in Davos mostly focused on Greenland. At times he stressed the strategical importance of Arctic territory, another time he underestimated it, repeatedly calling the island "a part of ice." respective times the president of the United States besides seemed to confuse Greenland... with Iceland.
However, 1 message remained consistent: he felt that Denmark and NATO were incapable to effectively defend Greenland against threats in the region. "It is simply a fact that no country or group of states can safe Greenland outside the United States," he said in Davos.
Piotr Kraśko about Donald Trump and Greenland. "That's not how it works"
Donald Trump's speech was commented on in TVN24 by Piotr Kraśko. Trump said he wouldn't usage force in Greenland. I would not be so certain if he could not buy this island," he said.
As the writer noted, Donald Trump pointed out that the US had already owned Greenland during planet War II and then donated it. In fact, in 1940 the Germans occupied Denmark, although not in six hours, as the American suggested. However, as Kraśko emphasized, "it is not that the United States has occupied Greenland as a result".
– The president of the United States met with the Ambassador of Denmark (...) and said, "Mr. Ambassador, for your sake, for our sake, for the sake of the world, we should have a military base in Greenland." What was the ambassador expected to say? "Mr. President, of course, build these bases." But it is not that the United States has signed any agreement – with Denmark or this ambassador, that they have become owners of Greenland and then graciously returned it – he stressed.
Indeed, in 1941 the United States and Canada only covered Greenland with allied protection. Kraśko pointed out that on this basis Trump might as well have said, "How stupid we were to give Sicily back to Italy", which would besides make no sense.
– After all, they [Americans—ed.] landed in Sicily, landed in North Africa, landed in Normandy. No 1 expects that due to the fact that Americans landed in Normandy in 1944, Normandy is actually American. And Paris, due to the fact that that's where the American troops went. This is not how it works – the writer explained.
Why does Donald Trump want Greenland? "US would be the second largest country in the world"
Kraśko besides pointed out, in his opinion, the most likely motive for Trump's actions towards Greenland – especially since, as he stressed, "the Danes have already met all his expectations",
– Let us remember that we are talking about the leaders of the country, which mostly came from purchases. (...) I think the point is to go back to past – like Thomas Jefferson, the 3rd president of the United States – ed.], who bought Louisiana from the French or Andrew Johnson [17th president of the United States – ed.], who bought Alaska from the Russians – as the 1 who enlarged the territory of the United States," he stated.
TVN24 reporter noted that Trump is doing this "big difference". “The United States is the world’s 4th largest country after Russia, Canada and China. If the United States had Greenland, (...) it would be the second largest country in the world," said Piotr Kraśko in TVN24.
And he concluded, "No president has made this before him, so it's most likely his dream for 250 years of his beautiful homeland.".
