While many may see this two-week period as indistinguishable from the remainder of Trump's era, future historians will not see it that way: they will compose it as an epochal change in global politics, possibly even more crucial than the fall of the Berlin Wall or terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001It marks the end of an era — an era of liberal global order led by Americans.
This era began after planet War II, erstwhile an isolatorial country reluctantly took over the function of planet leader, which was a huge, diverse venture resulting in unprecedented economical growth in history, technological discoveries, the flourishing of humanity and peace. America's material resources were essential for this ongoing decade, covering the full world's effort, but more crucial was the conviction, shared not only by hundreds of millions of Americans, but by countless people around the world, underpinned by it: that the United States is simply a unique nation that has a unique position to be a force for the well-being of the world.
Over these 8 decades, the ethics of idealism have been at the heart of American abroad policy, which can be traced since the country was established. Whether Republicans or Democrats, U.S. presidents regularly appealed to the providence that the United States, as the oldest democracy in the world, would play on the global stage. president Thomas Jefferson referred to a young nation that helped establish as the “best hope of the world”, while his rival John Adams sent weapons to the leaders of the slave rebellion that liberated Haiti.
More than 150 years later, Dwight Eisenhower stated that "we can be the richest and most powerful nation and yet lose the conflict for the planet if we do not aid our global neighbours defend their freedom and make their social and economical progress." His successor John F. Kennedy stated that America "will pay any price, bear any burden, face any difficulties, support any friend, argue any enemy to guarantee the endurance and success of freedom." And in his farewell speech, Ronald Reagan spoke of America as a “shining city on the hill”. This is simply a phrase that his ideological antagonist Barack Obama recalled during the 2016 election.

Defensible flaws and apparent qualities
Fulfilling these lofty ambitions obliged America to support democracy and to argue dictatorships. As a global superpower, on which there was a work that no another nation could or could not take on, could afford a flawlessly moral abroad policy of Sweden. Idealism inevitably clashed with realism, and the second frequently triumphed over the first.
This was peculiarly actual during the Cold War erstwhile Washington helped overthrow democratically elected leaders and supported authoritarian regimes. And it continues to this day erstwhile Americans support repressive governments in the mediate East. But even by utilizing immoral means, American leaders did so in pursuit of what they thought was moral gain, whether it was fighting communism, stopping the proliferation of weapons of mass demolition or resisting extremist Islam.
Opponents led by the American liberal global order are endlessly complaining of its disadvantages, while acknowledging its advantages — free and open sea routes, the spread of liberal democracy, values-based alliances, the protection of human rights — as something obvious.
They willingly condemn this order for its many disadvantages, but like not to conflict with an global strategy that rapidly takes its place — a planet in which America has given up its function as a global policeman, and authoritarian states gain areas of influence in which little powerful countries must submit to their will. Even the most fierce critics of the American global power can miss it erstwhile Russia, China and Iran dominate Europe, Asia and the mediate East.
No more Washington support.
The centuries-old past of at least rhetorical support of good over evil is what made last month's gathering at the Oval Office so disturbing. In a show that should embarrass all American, the 2 highest constitutional officials of the country behaved like a king and his regent, demanding obedience from a feudal petent.
Within a fewer days Trump suspended military aid and intelligence exchange with Ukraine and although both were later restored, the message he sent was unequivocal: Even a militaryly attacked ally can't number on Washington's support. After abandoning Ukraine due to individual anger, Trump returned to fight another villains in the world: Canada, Denmark, and Panama.
In addition to abandoning our democratic allies abroad, Trump cuts American democracy support apparatus in the country. The voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (the second is my erstwhile employer) were founded in the early 1950s to broadcast news and information outside the Iron Curtain, and after the end of the Cold War, they continued this mission in the regions of the planet which are inactive not free (many nations that are now full integrated into Europe — including Poland, the Czech Republic and the Baltic States — can delegate to these organizations, at least in part, their freedom).
American Agency for global improvement was founded for the administration of president John F. Kennedy to alleviate the social and economical conditions in which authoritarianism and terrorism flourish. In turn, the National Endowment for Democracy, formed in the days of president Ronald Reagan, provides grants to democratic activists around the world. Trump stopped financing all those organizations that represent the best American valuesTo the cheers of Moscow, Beijing and Tehran.

Trump's World: The Stronger Is Right
Instead of idealism, which revived American leadership in the Free World, Trump unleashed the Atavistic Cynicism of the Old World. In these fresh governments in which strength is right, any appeal to moral reasons in practice of American abroad policy is ridiculed as a defect of the weak, while the amoral exercise of power is worshipped as virtue of the strong. Instinctive American compassion for the weaker is replaced by admiration for the strong.
Threatened democracy is accused of provoking invasions into its own territory — it is simply a geopolitical counterpart of blaming rape victims for assaulting it — and for the first time in past America is voting with planet villains against its conventional democratic allies in the United Nations.
An officeholder who utilized to be synonymous with “the leader of the free world” slanders the president of a country fighting for its existence as a “dictator”, at the same time praising the despotic war criminal as a "great guy" and "great person". erstwhile Franklin Roosevelt (apparently) said that the Nicaraguan dictator Anastasio Somoza “is a su*** boy but isour boy of a bitch”, had a morally clear situation to admit caudillo For such, and tact to do it behind closed doors.
While Trump draws from Andrew Jackson's American abroad policy school, known for its harsh nationalism and distrust of global institutions, a historical figure on which ideas (and slogans) are based most, is Pat Buchanan. erstwhile a marginal figure of the American right, erstwhile talker Nixon and the Republican presidential candidate advocated the same rule triad 30 years ago — anti-immigration, anti-intervention, and protectionist — as Trump today.

NATO on the brink of death
In a new, wonderful world, America First America no longer represents the belief that democracies are better allies than dictatorships, that territorial aggression should be punished alternatively than rewarded, and alliances are an asset alternatively than a burden. In his Munich speech, Vance supported the inclusion of far-right parties in European governments, which he accused of creating a greater threat to his own citizens than Russia or China. All of this is the consequence of a abroad policy completely devoid of moral scruples.
Abandoning morality as a origin in abroad affairs besides marks a turning point for the Republican Party. Next period is the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. American Conservatives erstwhile pointed to this event — chaotic scenes involving desperate Vietnamese fleeing from the impending Communist attack, 2 million people on boats that escaped, horrific repressions that fell on those who failed — as a disgraceful example of what happens erstwhile the United States abandons its ally.
Regardless of the advantages of American engagement in this conflict, the tragic consequences of American withdrawal have echoed throughout the region. Within a fewer months Laos and Cambodia fell victim to communist rebellion, as confirmed by the explanation of “domin”.
Trump's abandonment of Ukraine could possibly overshadow these events in terms of geopolitical scale and human suffering. If Ukraine is forced to sign a peace agreement that will not supply clear safety guarantees, it will only be a substance of time before Russian president Vladimir Putin tries another anschlussu.
In the absence of American leadership in the Free World, specified an invasion may end with the overthrow of the government in Kiev, leading to tens of millions of refugees and the mass presence of Russian troops on the border of respective NATO associate States. With a warrant of collective safety in shreds thanks to Trump's blackmailing threats not to sustain it, NATO — the most successful military alliance in past — will be dead in all respect, beginning doors to further Russian aggression in Europe and elsewhere.

Donald Trump in Red Square
Looking for positives, any nostalgically mention the late concluded era of American global leadership, holding on to the hope that everything will return to average erstwhile a politician or conventional Republican occupies the Oval Office. While the fight for the future of conservative abroad policy continues, regardless of the result of the next election, there is no turning back.
He is no longer insecure under the American safety umbrella, afraid allies specified as Poland and South Korea are investigating the anticipation of gaining atomic weapons. The erstwhile criticized French thought of "strategic autonomy" — an independent pole of European military power — is now the most crucial point of the program across the continent.
Five Eyes Intelligence Alliance composed of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and fresh Zealand may shrink to “Four Eyes ” due to the unreliability of its most powerful member. What happened in the last 2 weeks of February cannot be undone in the minds of America's allies or its opponents. What is the difference between them in a planet where everyone is for themselves?
The communicative I wrote 8 years ago ends on triumph Day erstwhile Putin proudly watches a large military parade on Red Square. Although Trump denied joining the ceremony this year, if he manages to force an agreement on Ukraine, he may not be able to defy the temptation to enjoy his undeserved function as a global peacemaker. Standing alongside Putin in Moscow, quietly granting the American designation of the first armed annexation of the territory on the European continent since planet War II — specified a scene would mark the beginning of a fresh era in which it is increasingly hard to separate facts from fiction.
