This year 9 more Polish military satellites will be in orbit, the first 1 inactive in March or early April – said Deputy Minister of defence Cezary Tomczyk during the authoritative beginning of the Satellite Operations Centre. The task of the unit will include support for military operations, monitoring and analysing the situation in orbit.
The full name of the fresh centre is: Centre for Satellite Operations of the Geospatial designation and Satellite Services Agency. "It was created to guarantee the safety of Polish infrastructure in space, but besides the infrastructure of our allies to supervise it, to be able to inform and intervene in the event of a threat," said Deputy Minister of defence Cezary Tomczyk, during the authoritative beginning of the Centre for Satellite Operations in Warsaw. As he added, from experiences that flow from Ukraine or Middle East, it is clear that the support of the armed forces from the satellite component is the basis for planning modern operations. “This 5th domain, or space domain, is already present in our military activities,” said Tomczyk.
Deputy Minister recalled that in late 2025 The first Polish military satellite was carried into space. He besides announced that 9 more military satellites from Poland will be in orbit this year under the MicroSAR and MicroGlob programmes. “They will supply our soldiers with a full view of the planet in places that are of immense importance to us,” said the deputy chief of the MON. He besides added that according to information obtained from the United States, the next Polish satellite from the constellation "MicroSAR" will be in orbit later this month, possibly in early April. – In turn within SAFE program the financing of the Polish geostationary satellite, which I hope will be part of the equipment of the armed forces, was recorded. The talks are already ongoing," said Tomczyk. And he said, "And this is not our last word.
The deputy chief of the MON besides thanked U.S. allies for supporting the creation of the Satellite Operations Centre. "Today the United States has the top capabilities for space forces. Thanks to our cooperation with the American side, we have access to all sensors in the world, which, from our point of view, are important," stressed the Deputy Minister. He besides reminded that the United States is the most crucial safety partner for Poland.
Also Colonel Leszek Paszkowski, Head of the ARGUS, an institution that manages military satellites and develops data obtained from orbit, stressed the U.S. contribution to the creation of COS. "The Center for Satellite Operations was established in close cooperation and with the large support of American space forces," said the officer. He added that thanks to the Americans, COS operators and ARGUS Satellite Support Center, which is liable for controlling the satellite in orbit, participated in specialist trainings from July 2025 to January 2026.
As Colonel Paszkowski explained, the centre has been operating within the ARGUS structure for any time now its symbolic beginning and announcement of operational readiness. He added that COS operators are already on regular operational duty, working with allies, including primarily with US space forces. Permanently monitor space to guarantee the safety and protection of its own and allied satellite resources and keep continuity of support from the space ceiling for all types of armed forces. “Thanks to the capacity center, they let for advanced reconnaissance and tracking of objects in space utilizing sensors deployed around the world,” explained Colonel Paszkowski.
The mission and function of COS was discussed by Colonel Grzegorz Matyja, the center commander and deputy head of ARGUS. “The centre’s activities will focus on 5 areas related to the space operational domain: supporting operations and activities of the armed forces, global cooperation and coordination with allies, building awareness of the space operational domain, coordinating data or services from this domain and ensuring the safety of national satellite systems in their space operations,” said the COS chief.
Colonel Matyja stressed that the fresh centre would carry out tasks in close cooperation with the ARGUS Satellite Support Centre. At the same time, he pointed out that COS was to supply support not only to armed forces, but besides in the future to civilian satellites which would be utilized by government administration units, academic centres or state safety systems, e.g. for communication or imaging of Earth for cartography purposes.
During the ceremony, Brig-Gen Jacob Middleton, commander of the United States Space Force in Europe and Africa, besides spoke. The general said that the fresh unit in ARGUS is an expression of the improvement of the Polish space domain and strengthens the safety of all NATO.
