The president of the Pontifical Council on Legal Texts, Cardinal Francesco Cocopalmiero, called for a permanent dialog with Masonry. He participated, at the end of last week, in a gathering behind closed doors between the heads of the Italian Masonic lodges and elder representatives of the Catholic Church held in Milan.
The Church has long taught that membership of Masonic associations is incompatible with its teaching and so remains forbidden. The faithful who belong to them are in a state of grave sin and cannot enter Holy Communion," states the 1983 Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith. Last November, the Dicastery of the Doctrine of religion confirmed this position.
