South Korean abroad Minister Cho Hjun confirmed on Friday that Seoul and Washington are having talks about redirecting parts of U.S. military equipment from the Korean Peninsula, including Patriot rocket systems, to the needs of Iran.
During the parliamentary hearing, he admitted that the military from both countries were working closely to manage strategical resources.
– It is actual – the minister briefly replied, asked by the opposition MP if negotiations on the relocation of arms were underway. However, he refused to give operational details, stressing that decisions would be taken on a case-by-case basis.
The Korean paper "DongA Ilbo" revealed yesterday that Washington is considering moving air defence systems, including THAAD and Patriot, to the mediate East in the face of escalation of conflict with Tehran.
US Force Command in Korea (USFK) refused to comment on military movements, ensuring only a "unwavering commitment" to defend South Korea against the threat from the North.
– US (stationary) operations in South Korea are subject to close consultations between the military authorities of both countries, provided by the head of the South Korean Ministry of Diplomacy, as quoted by the portal of the paper “Chosun Ilbo”. He besides informed that Washington had not so far requested direct military support from the South Korean Army.
In South Korea, there are about 27,000 American soldiers permanently stationed. The most crucial nonsubjective of this mission is to deter the government in Pyongyang.
