No more passports for children! The German authorities have announced plans to abolish specified documents, which puts a number of questions before their parents about their future journeys of comfort. The fresh regulations will enter into force as early as 1 January 2024. A replacement paper for a kid passport will be another kind of recognition which will be issued on a specified basis and the cost will be determined. These changes will affect household travel planning and will require fresh procedures related to the travel documentation of the youngest.

What causes the removal of kid passports?

Passports for children in Germany are 1 of the fewer papers that do not have an embedded chip, which makes them considered little safe. For this reason, their validity is shorter than the chip documents. In Germany, passports for children are only valid for 1 year, which requires the yearly renewal of the document. This procedure becomes problematic both for parents and for offices. According to the information provided by Welt, these are the main reasons why the German government decided to remove this kind of document.

The Ministry of the Interior (BMI) reported that passports for children may be issued, renewed or updated only until 31 December 2023. This decision is an effort to address the issue of the short validity of passports for children, and it is likely to introduce safer documentation solutions for the youngest.

No more passports for children in Germany. From 1 January 2024 fresh rules

As of January 1, 2024, German youngest travelers will be bound by the same rules as adults. As part of the journey within the European Union, children will be allowed to travel only with ID card. However, trips outside the EU will require a passport with a built-in chip. From 2024, both the recently issued identity cards and passports for children will be valid for 6 years.

However, the German Ministry of the Interior draws attention to the dynamic nature of children's improvement during this period. Changes in the appearance and characteristics of the kid may be so crucial that recognition on the basis of the first paper may become hard even before the expiry date. This is an crucial aspect to consider erstwhile utilizing identity papers for the youngest travellers.

Where and how will you get a fresh paper for your child?

W The Citizens' Service Office (Bürgeramt) can apply for both identity card and passport. Current passport photographs and identity papers will be needed to carry out this process. In the case of children who have not yet had an ID card, it will be essential to supply a birth certificate in order to initiate the procedure for issuing the document.
