On the 1 hand, we hear the message that Ukraine is effectively resisting the Russian attack, and that regaining full control of its own territory is only a substance of time. On the another hand, we regularly hear about the next Russian attacks on the largest cities in western Ukraine, the escalation of military activities and the expanding cost of human and economical conflict. Between these narratives there is an information war in which it is hard to separate a reliable analysis from propaganda.
There's besides immense business around the war. It has become an area for many actors to prosecute their own political, strategical and economical objectives. Europe – including the countries straight neighbouring Ukraine, especially Poland – is inactive struggling with the question of its own security. There are serious doubts about the level of military preparation, morale of societies and real defence capabilities. Discussing the modernization of the army is frequently accompanied by disputes about direction of arms purchases and dependence on abroad equipment suppliers. All of this raises questions about the long-term strategy and whether Europe has truly learned from the ongoing conflict.
