Although freedom was a purely male movement, it is worth noting that even in the earliest period women could belong to an organization associated with the Order. After the Pope issued in 1738 a ban on Catholics from entering Masonic lodges, a group of free-mulators of Catholics formed in Vienna the Mops Order, which allowed candidates of both sexes.
