An argument about church bells. Attack on tradition or “acoustic stress”?

Attack on tradition or “acoustic stress”? The battalion of church bells, which struck hours in Matute, Spain, found the final in court.

The court granted the right of the resident, who was disturbed by the nightly beating of church bells, ordered them to be silenced and the female herself paid €3,000 for compensation for “acoustic stress” and violation of her right to rest. The female complained about sleeping problems.

Against the silence of the bells were the remainder of the people of Matute, who considered this act an attack on tradition. Despite the court ruling, most residents want the bells to proceed ringing hours – besides at night, as has been the case for over 200 years. The conflict in the Spanish village has lasted since 2022.
