The latest data published by the Canadian Institute for wellness Information (CIHI) show that at least 150 abortions were performed in Canada from 2023 to 2024 during the late pregnancy in which the kid was born alive.
The data so far did not include Quebec Province, 1 of the most populous in the country, meaning that the actual image of the situation may have been understated. The current ranking besides included figures from Quebec for the first time: 27 cases of late abortion in which children came into the planet alive. 123 specified cases have previously been reported from another provinces and territories, giving a full of 150 documented births alive after abortion in the last year.
In a broader perspective, data indicate a crucial increase in the number of late abortions: 5738 over the last 5 years, of which 642 cases ended with the birth of a dead or surviving child. This is simply a 125% increase compared to the erstwhile year.
An additional light to the situation casts a survey published in the American diary of Obstetrics & Gynecology in June 2024. Scientists analyzed all abortions of the second trimester (13 777 cases) performed in hospitals in Quebec from 1989 to 2021. The results are worrying: in the last decade, the proportion of live births after abortion increased fivefold — from 4.1% to 20.8%. Between 20 and 24 weeks of pregnancy, more than 1 in 5 children (21.7%) survived the minute of childbirth.
Even more alarming are the data on the causes of these abortions. The survey showed that in 48% of cases there were no medical indications or threats to the life of the parent – the decision to have an abortion was motivated by ‘personal or unspecified’ reasons.
This raises serious ethical and legal questions. Is the kid who is having an abortion guaranteed medical care? How long have these kids lived? Does their lives end with no intervention?
These data are shocking: “Every life is worth whatever the week of pregnancy it is in. If a kid is born alive, his rights cannot be ignored," says 1 of the Canadian pro-life activists.
CIHI has inactive not answered the reality of those children who survived the abortion. But the question is not gone: can a society that can stand the sight of a surviving kid without aid truly talk of itself as civilized?
