Keir Starmer will pay a visit to China

According to Nikkei Asia, UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, will launch a three-day visit to China this week, which will take place on 29-31 January 2026. The journey will include Beijing and Shanghai and is the first visit by the British Prime Minister to China in 8 years.
The Prime Minister will be accompanied by Chancellor Rachel Reeves, Trade Secretary Peter Kyle and a delegation of about 50 business leaders from companies specified as HSBC, Jaguar Land Rover and Diageo. The main intent of the visit is to revive economical and trade relations. The program includes meetings with president Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Li Qiang.
The discussions will focus on strengthening trade cooperation, including a service agreement, common designation of professional qualifications and visa waiver for short-term business travel. The British delegation will besides address the issue of whisky duties.

In addition to economical topics, according to representatives of the British government, Prime Minister Starmer intends to discuss safety and human rights issues, including the case of imprisoned dissident Jimmy Lai and the situation of Uighur in the Sinciang region. The visit aims to find a balance between economical cooperation and defence of British national values and security.
