The European Commission has sued Poland and Spain to the EU Court of Justice for not implementing the EU Emissions Trading strategy (ETS) rules in the aviation sector into national law.
To both countries, the EC requests financial penalties.
It is an amendment of the 2023 Aviation Directive to the EU's simplification target. Its nonsubjective is to increase aviation's contribution to greenhouse gas emanation reductions. It assumes, among another things, the gradual abolition of free allowances for airlines and introduces into EU law the principles of the CORSIA strategy created by the global civilian Aviation Organisation. This strategy requires carriers to compensate for the increase in emissions by purchasing appropriate emanation simplification units.
The Commission informed on Thursday that the implementation deadline was 31 December 2023.
The Commission recalled that the infringement procedure against Poland and Spain started in January 2024. According to her, the actions of the Polish and Spanish authorities have proved insufficient, so the cases were addressed to the EU Court of Justice together with the application for financial penalties.
