On Friday at 9:00 a.m. there will be a distant trial against erstwhile president Andrzej Duda (PiS) in the territory Court in Warsaw. This is the first time in a case concerning the controversial message of September 2023 about the movie "Green Border" by Agnieszka Holland.
The Racist and Xenophobic Behaviour Monitoring Centre filed a suit last September. The case concerns the words of Duda spoken on 20 September 2023 in the "Guest of News" program on TVP Info.
Controversial words about officers
Andrzej Duda then defended the usage by the Border defender of the slogan "Only pigs sit in the cinema" in relation to people watching the Holland film. "I am sorry that specified a movie is being made, which - as I have heard, due to the fact that I have not seen this movie - powerfully slanders Polish officers" - said the erstwhile president.
Duda argued that Border defender officers "do their duty" and "guard the border of Poland and the safety of Poles". He added that "they besides defender the EU-Schengen border" and defend against "hybrid action carried out by abroad state authorities".
The erstwhile president besides referred to the historical context of the slogan. "The fact that Mrs Holland shows Polish officers, performing tasks for Polish society, for the safety of all of us, shows them in this way, I am not amazed that the officers of the Border defender who got acquainted with this movie utilized this slogan known to us from the Nazi occupation" - he said.
Awarded border film
The "Green Border" premiered on 5 September 2023 at the 80th Venice global movie Festival. The movie was honored with the peculiar Jury Award, and in 2024 received Golden Lions at the 49th Polish movie Festival in Gdynia.
Agnieszka Holland explained at a conference in Venice: "The movie tells about what is happening on the Polish-Belarusian border. It presents the responses of politicians, armed forces, refugees, activists and residents of the region to this challenge". The manager added: "We did not want to cultivate propaganda of justice. We wanted the movie to reflect how hard the choices we made are."
