Israeli police turned the Old Town of Jerusalem into a “militarized zone” and prevented the faithful prayer during Easter. As a result, thousands of people lined up for hours to attend the Holy Fire ceremony at the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre on Saturday. During the ceremony, the priests light candles inside the chapel built in the place where Jesus' grave was likely and then pass them on to the assembled.

The Israeli authorities issued about 6,000 permits for Christians from the West Bank to enter Jerusalem for service during Easter. As it turned out, buses full of Palestinian Christians were blocked at border crossing points and only 500 people were allowed in.
The Orthodox Patriarchate condemned the police's treatment of the faithful. "Israeli police forces have turned the holy city into a militarized zone, erecting barriers, preventing believers from reaching the churches and attacking the faithful, both local and pilgrims from all over the world" He's making a statement.
