The European Commission adopted a trade agreement early in September with South American bloc – Mercosur. The provisional agreement is to apply pending ratification of the comprehensive agreement by national parliaments. It will enter into force following the agreement of the EP and 15 EU associate States.

Some EU countries, specified as Germany, Spain or Italy, have declared that they will support an agreement between the EU and Mercosur. Poland opposes it, recognizing the threat to Polish agriculture in its provisions. There are besides concerns that Mercosur countries may not meet European food safety standards.

President Karol Nawrocki, among others, spoke against the agreement. – We request cooperation with countries of South America that are so close to our values, (...) but erstwhile I hear that we are to sign the agreement of the European Union with the Mercosur countries, I say no.
