In June 2020, erstwhile Wirecard – a fresh “pearl” of the German FinTech sector, promoted even by then Chancellor Angele Merkel – collapsed in Germany, the full European financial marketplace was shocked. Surprisingly, two-three billion euros disappeared from the company's accounts**. Initially, the scandal dealt mainly with alleged fraud and fraud. In the following weeks, however, information began to appear suggesting that the Wirecard scandal could be 1 of the largest Russian intelligence operations, and the central figure of the full operation became Jan Marsalek – the company's operating director, present wanted by Interpol.
