Italy and India strengthen the strategical partnership

On the occasion of the G20 summit, the head of the Italian government of Giorgia Meloni, together with the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, announced closer cooperation on maritime infrastructure within the India– close East-Europe economical Corridor (IMEEC). Both countries are besides to negociate an industrial defence action plan under the fresh Common strategical Plan for the period 2025–2029.

Meloni wants to make a strategical partnership with India in communication and defence initiatives. The focus is on "connection, defence, trade, fresh technologies and clean energy.

Modi noted that the talks with Meloni afraid defence, security, trade and technology, but besides cultural and educational cooperation. As the head of the Indian government said, "Indian-Italian relationship can greatly contribute to the creation of a better planet."

Meloni stressed the issue of bilateral strategical partnership and deepening cooperation "for bilateral partnership to the benefit of the economies and citizens of both nations and to support the common values of democracy, regulation of law and sustainable development".

Both countries are to work on "sustainable transport" in the context of "environmental sustainability" by expanding maritime and land infrastructure, including under IMEEC. They are to conclude cooperation agreements in the maritime and port sectors.

Both countries will besides lay down rules on investment in defence industry. An action plan is to be created between the Association of Indian Weapons Producers and the Italian Federation of Aviation, Defence and safety Industries.

The Italians want to engage more in the Indo-Pacific region through their army's cooperation with the Indian army. This is intended to aid increase interoperability. Maritime cooperation is to address marine contamination consequence and marine exploration and rescue.

Both countries will strengthen their relations in the fight against cybercrime and cyber threats, lobbying for circumstantial solutions in multilateral forums, and will meet annually to specify rules for combating terrorism. Cooperation is to focus on the sharing of intelligence, exchange of experience between police and safety workers, courts, etc.

The agreement takes into account migration and mobility issues. Legal channels of migration, "transparent" recruitment procedures and measures will be taken to combat illegal migration. The Italians intend to train Indian wellness professionals to be later employed in their country.

Both countries will implement strategical multilateral initiatives: Global Biofuels Alliance and IMEEC, which are founding members.

IMEEC is the planned economical Corridor of India- close East-Europe, which focuses on the improvement of infrastructure connections and economical integration between Asia, the Persian Gulf and Europe. The corridor is to run from India through the United arabian Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Israel and Greece to another European countries.

A competitive initiative for the Chinese Belt and way was established on 9 September 2023 during the G20 summit in fresh Delhi. A Memorandum of knowing (MoU) has already been signed by the governments of India, the United States, the United arabian Emirates, Saudi Arabia, France, Germany, Italy and the European Union.
